Welcome to our adventure

You'll find everything you need to know about our challenge; from irrelevant cycling facts, interactive polls, updates on the training or lack of it, dates and routes for each leg and the occasional story or picture as we build up to the big day.

Keep your eyes posted to Sean's daily blog as he undertakes his great British pie audit. With his calorie busting pie counter, he'll be short listing his nominations for the pub serving the "best pie and real ale pint" award on each leg of the trip.

Let us know if you fancy joining us on a leg of the trip and enter our hall of fame over the coming weeks.

Most importantly there's a link below to the "just giving" web site, where you'll be able to donate your hard earnt cash for our worthy cause.

Just why are you doing it?

Well as someone once said "because its there". Plenty more reasons as I'm sure you can imagine, but we won't bore you with them here.

So what about the route? The route is a compromise between directness and keeping away from busy roads, using B roads and lanes, whilst ensuring each leg finishes at a recommended real ale pub for comfortable overnight accommodation. In total 1,017 miles from top to bottom.

Conventional wisdom suggests that the cycle ride should be undertaken from Lands End to John O' Groats with westerly trade winds assisting cyclists throughout the trip.

However such wisdom ignores the fact that John O' Groats is a dump. A "barren wasteland" and acknowledged in many cycling blogs as one of the most inhospitable places on earth, especially for a celebratory booze up. When your hotel accommodation in John O'Groats looks like this, its best to make this the start rather than the end of your trip.

So the trip will start at John O' Groats, well to be precise Luton or even more precise, Luton airport - which would give John O' Groats a good run for its money as the armpit of Great Britain.

So we'll step on the pedals and head north to south, "the wrong way round". After cycling 1,000 miles with the wind in our hair and sun in our eyes, we'll finish in the comparative tropical, dancing girl surroundings of Lands End.
